Position Title: Director, Benefits

External Description:

Manages the personnel involved in the development, implementation and maintenance of the company’s benefits programs including vacation, holiday, time off, sick pay, unemployment, retirement plans, disability, flexible spending, service awards, group health/medical/dental coverage, vendor management, wellness and health education initiatives, and life insurance. Develops programs designed to keep employees informed about company benefit plans and any proposed changes. Ensures that programs are current with regard to trends, practices and costs. Negotiates coverage, services and costs with carriers and brokers. Interacts with others in areas, such as the risk management or legal departments, to investigate innovative programs (e.g., self-insurance) to determine feasibility in terms of cost, risk to the company, and legal implications. Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages team(s) of Senior Benefit Analysts and Benefits Manager to provide advice and support to global HR Leaders on all benefit matters.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with global HR leaders, HR Business Partners, finance partners, and other internal teams who support global benefits throughout the company.
  • Manage broker relationships and partner with them to continually review plan design for effectiveness, compliance, and consistency with market trends.
  • Analyze and evaluate existing benefit plan provisions, track new developments in the benefits field and recommend program changes. Work closely with the company’s broker to identify opportunities to improve benefits programs, diagnosing gaps between current and desired situations and recommending actions to resolve gaps. Ensure that the relative value of plans delivered to employees is consistent across all countries.
  • Drive premium renewal negotiations; work with the broker to interpret and analyze participation, utilization and claims information, incorporating findings into future benefits design and company financial planning process.
  • Act as final escalation contact for escalated issues on benefits and leave of absence plans with regards to interpretation of plan provisions and requirements and resolution of administration and policy issues and questions.
  • Develop and lead global corporate wellness initiatives, with the aim of encouraging employees to lead a healthy lifestyle and in the long term contain increasing health care costs.
  • At this level team is typically regional, but may be multi-region, with accountability for cross BU support.  Direct business leader support relationship routinely at SVP level, but may be aligned to EVP level.
  • Key advisor to HR Executive on Benefit programs, organizational initiatives and industry/market best practices.

Knowledge & Skills 

  • Uses expert leadership skill in collaboration and prioritization to direct and influence operations in the functional area.
  • Previous experience within compensation is a plus.  The position will primarily be focused on US Benefits, but may be asked to partner with the compensation team for additional support.
  • Expert level analytical and complex problem solving skills in their functional area, with the ability to influence as a leader across functions.
  • Adept at setting and driving strategic initiatives in the functional area, as well as influencing at higher tiers of the organization.
  • Frequent engagement with top level executives to provide functional expertise advice that influences business unit strategy.
  • Uses functional area strategy and direction from senior leadership, as well as long term business objectives, to guide work and direct the work of others.
  • Creates an environment that promotes the identification and development of talent, as well as planning for future talent needs of the organization.
  • Ability to build effective partnerships and business relationships, with a extraordinary degree of credibility
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work on multiple priorities simultaneously

Education/Experience

  • BA/BS or equivalent educational background is preferred.
  • Minimum 15+ years of relevant professional experience.
